Stargazing in Alpine
On August 15th, Alpine Park is excited to collaborate with the University of Calgary's Rothney Astrophysical Observatory (RAO) to host an educational evening to learn more about our celestial neighbours, including satellites, stars, and the planet Saturn, which is much closer to Earth this August.
Hosted from various locations throughout the community including Picnic Grove and Skyline Pond, telescopes will be provided by RAO with teams on hand to help guide guests through what they’re seeing.
Despite being so well-connected to the city, Alpine Park’s location offers a unique opportunity for astronomers and amateur star-gazers alike to take in the stellar night sky away from the light pollution of the inner city.
With the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory located a short 15-minute drive from the community in Dark Sky Country – a dark sky corridor stretching through Foothills County along the western boundary of Calgary – Alpine has committed to help decrease light pollution though the use of smart lighting solutions throughout the community in order to protect this clear view of the night sky for the decades ahead, making star gazing and viewings of astronomical events accessible for future generations.
Each viewing station will start with a quick orientation at 8 pm at the Showhome Neighbourhood before walking over to each site, so be sure to join us at the Welcome Centre for this fun family event.
